Erasmus Reinhold's father was Johann Reinhold (1479-1558), a tax collector and also the secretary of the last abbot of the Benedictine monastery at Saalfeld. Little is known about Erasmus's youth and early education. He had a brother, named Johann like their father, who became Professor of Mathematics at Greifswald in 1549.

Erasmus Reinhold (1511-1553) was a German astronomer and mathematician. The most eminent astronomer of his time, he was a firm Copernican and a professor at Wittenberg University. His Ptolemaei mathematicae (1549) was the first Greek language edition of Claudius Ptolemy 's Almagest published in Europe.
