The Royal Festival Hall forms part of the South Bank. The site which covers 27 acres was once marshland, drained at the beginning of the eighteenth century and developed in 1718 by Charles Bascom for a house, named Belvedere, and a pleasure garden. Later the site was occupied by Lamberth Waterworks, and then by the Lion Brewery.
Royal Festival Hall is at the heart of the Southbank Centre complex. Opened in 1951 as part of the Festival of Britain, the Grade I listed Hall is one of the world’s leading performance venues. Some 50 years later this landmark building has been reopened after 2 years’ refurbishment, the culmination of 15 years design work since Allies and Morrison’s appointment as house architect in 1992.
Important information. From Tuesday 20 February 2024, the Level 2 foyers at the Royal Festival Hall will be closed while refurbishment work is taking place. Alternative facilities, including a ticket office, cafe and bar, will be available in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, while drinks and snacks will be on offer 60 minutes before an event on Levels ...
