Wealthy lords and ladies, and even the royals, commissioned Brown to landscape their vast estates, which revealed much about their status and style.

  5. Brown was employed by Lord Cobham at Stowe in 1741. He took responsibility for both landscaping and architectural works, establishing himself as an independent designer and contractor. Several large commissions followed (more than 40 between 1750 and 1760), and his reputation earned him an average of £8,000 per year.

  7. Capability Brown biography. Lancelot "Capability" Brown was born in Kirkharle, Northumberland in 1715 (more about his nickname "Capability" in a moment). Young Lancelot was educated at Cambo School, before serving as a gardener's boy in the service of Sir William Loraine. From there he moved on to Wotton, owned by Sir Richard Grenville.
