  5. As soon as he returned from the 1896 Matabele Rebellion (Umvukela) Selous was being referred to in newspapers and articles as ‘the famous’ or ‘the celebrated’ Frederick Selous. He was clearly the inspiration for Sir H. Rider Haggard’s character, Allan Quatermain , celebrated in the 1887 novel of the same name that followed Haggard’s 1885 novel King Solomon’s Mines .

  6. Selous took the missionary Frederick Arnot from Klerksdorp to Shoshong which they reached in March. This was Selous’ first season as a collector of museum specimens. He writes: “ My days I spent in shooting and preserving antelope skins for mounting in museums or in collecting butterflies. ” [xlvii] These butterflies were later presented to the South African Museum in Cape Town.
