In this portrait miniature – often given as a gift or a love-token, and worn as jewellery – Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland, reclines on the grass in a posture of lovelorn abjection. Nicknamed the ‘Wizard Earl’ by his contemporaries, Percy was fascinated by alchemy, mysticism, and the occult, and the open book in this portrait hints at his scholarly pursuits.
Northumberland, Henry Percy, 9th earl of (1564–1632). Northumberland inherited the title at the age of 21 in 1585 when his father, confined to the Tower, was found shot. He was given the Garter in 1593 and performed some military services.

Henry Percy, 8th Earl of Northumberland, 2nd Baron Percy (1532 – 21 June 1585) was an English nobleman and conspirator. Origins [ edit ] He was born in about 1532 at Newburn Manor (Northumberland), the second of two sons of Sir Thomas Percy (c. 1504–1537) (2nd son of Henry Percy, 5th Earl of Northumberland ), by his wife Eleanor Harbottle.

From there, Thomas’ son, Thomas Percy became the 7th Earl and then his brother, Henry became 8th Earl of Northumberland. Then Henry, the 8th Earl’s son (another Henry) became the 9th Earl.
