He was the last ruling duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a state of the German Empire, from 30 July 1900 to 14 November 1918.

Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha came to Windsor in the following autumn, and on 18 October a marriage between him and the queen was arranged, though not announced till November.

Edit: Funny thing is, I don't believe any other house has changed their name in the same sense as the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha did. There has been no lineage that was broken between House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and the House of Windsor.
