Frederick Law Olmsted. Frederick Law Olmsted (* 26.April 1822 in Hartford, Connecticut; † 28. August 1903 in Belmont, Massachusetts) war ein führender Landschaftsarchitekt nach dem Sezessionskrieg und wurde vor allem als Begründer der amerikanischen Landschaftsarchitektur anerkannt.

Frederick Law Olmsted was born in 1822 in Hartford, Connecticut, and at age eight was sent by his father to receive his schooling from clergymen living in the surrounding countryside. After sickness prevented Olmsted from entering Yale College in 1837, he spent the next two decades traveling and working variously as a successful farmer, writer, journalist and businessman.
Olmsted retired in 1895, but his sons, John Charles and Frederick Jr., carried on, and the Olmsted Firm was a functioning landscape practice for over 100 years with commissions for about 6,000 landscapes across North America. (Frederick Jr. was christened Henry Perkins and renamed by his father when he was about eight.
Career & Projects. A 19th-century innovator who shaped the American landscape. After nearly two decades of diverse experiences, in 1865, Olmsted turned full-time to the practice of landscape architecture. That year, he returned to New York from California to finish Central Park and to design Prospect Park with his business partner, Calvert Vaux.
