De Australische kunstenaar John Peter Russell (1858-1930) groeide op in Sydney. Hij kwam naar Europa om daar kunstonderwijs te volgen. Hij studeerde eerst aan de Slade School of Fine Art in Londen en daarna bij Fernand Cormon in Parijs. John Peter Russell ontmoette daar Vincent van Gogh.

Russell was close friends with avant-garde artists including Vincent van Gogh and Auguste Rodin, he dined with Claude Monet and taught impressionist techniques to Henri Matisse. Russell challenged conventions to find new ways of seeing and representing the natural world and became an exciting and original colour painter.

The legend of John Peter Russell has many attractive aspects, but none more so than his friendship with Vincent Van Gogh. Yet, as with all legends, little is actually documented about their friendship. It was first brought to light by Henry Thannhauser, art-historian son of the famous dealer Justin K. Thannhauser, in 1938.
