Palade's work in the 1950s established the ribosome as the seat of protein synthesis in the cytoplasm. In the 1950s and 1960s, he teamed with Philip Siekevitz and then with Lewis Greene, Colvin Redman, David Sabatini, and Yutaka Tashiro to demonstrate that the dense membranes isolated by Claude represented fragments of ER with bound ribosomes.
