Georgiana Cavendish (née Spencer), Duchess of Devonshire (1757–1806), was the eldest daughter of John Spencer, first Earl Spencer and his wife, Margaret Georgiana Spencer (née Poyntz). Of her four siblings, only two others survived to adulthood: George John Spencer, who became second Earl; and Henrietta.

After suffering many miscarriages, Georgiana threw herself into other pursuits: she wrote a novel, became a passionate advocate and campaigner for the whig party and entered into a complex romantic relationship with Lady Elizabeth Foster, who was also her husband’s mistress.

From 1780 she became the confidante of George, Prince of Wales (1762-1830), who allied himself with the Whigs that year. Her glamour and inventiveness initiated numerous fashions including the "Devonshire hat", the "Devonshire minuet," and "Devonshire brown."

  5. William and Georgiana Cavendish had three children, a son and two daughters. Their son, William George Spencer Cavendish, later became the 6th Duke of Devonshire. The Duchess had another daughter, Eliza Courtney, as a result of her affair with a politican, Charles Grey, 2nd Early Grey, who later became prime minister of England.

  6. She was forced by her husband to give up Eliza, shortly after her birth, who was raised raised by Grey's aunt and uncle but visited her in secret. The Duchess of Devonshire is famous not only for her marital arrangements, her catastrophic affairs, her beauty and sense of style, but also for her love of gambling and became addicted to gambling and extravagent parties.
