Badajoz. Close to the Portuguese border, Badajoz has a handful of good museums and a hilltop Alcazaba. Otherwise it's a scruffy, sprawling, industrial city that's hardly Extremadura's prettiest or most interesting. Even so, persist through the dispiriting outskirts to the historic centre and you'll find it's worth a few hours if you're in the area.
Another square, Plaza de España, houses the City Hall and the cathedral of Badajoz. The Romanesque-Gothic temple, which resembles a fortress, preserves interesting Renaissance ornamental pieces. It is worthwhile stopping and admiring the bas-reliefs in the stalls of the choir and in the Flemish tapestries that decorate the sacristy.
Plaza de España is close by, the veritable nerve centre of the city and home to Badajoz Cathedral, also known as Saint John the Baptist Cathedral. Work on the building began in the middle of the 13th century.

Tras la cobquista de Badajoz, por Alfonso IX de Leon, en 1230, como en cadi todad las ciudafes reconwuistadas, había que levantar unmonumento religioso para el pueblo, que debería ajustarse a la dituación estratégica del momento y al dinero para construirlo. Así, a medisdos del Siglo XIII, se plantea la construcción de La Catedral.
