  1. 27 de may. de 2024 · Europa has a diameter of 3,130 km (1,940 miles), which makes it a little smaller than Earth ’s Moon. It orbits Jupiter at a distance of about 671,000 km (417,000 miles). Europa’s density of 3.0 grams per cubic cm indicates that it consists predominantly of rock with a fairly small proportion of frozen or liquid water.

  2. 3 de nov. de 2023 · Jupiter's frozen moon, Europa, has captivated the imaginations of scientists for decades. Why? Because below that thick layer of ice, a vast ocean has been d...

  3. 6 de may. de 2024 · The rock-hard, icy surface of Jupiter’s moon Europa has huge cracks and jagged ridges. It's believed that these cracks are caused by the flexing from Europa's tides. This close-up image of Europa's surface was taken by NASA's Galileo orbiter. Credit: Galileo Project/JPL/NASA. No one knows what the reddish material in the cracks might be.

  4. ESA's JUICE Mission. PAST MISSIONS. 5. This view of Jupiter's icy moon Europa was captured by JunoCam on NASA's Juno spacecraft during the mission's close flyby on Sept. 29, 2022. The picture is a composite of JunoCam's second, third, and fourth images taken during the flyby, as seen from the perspective of the fourth image. North is to the left.

  5. Europa’s surface is made of water ice and so it reflects 5.5 times the sunlight than our Moon does. Europa orbits Jupiter at about 417,000 miles (671,000 kilometers) from the planet, which itself orbits the Sun at a distance of roughly 500 million miles (780 million kilometers), or 5.2 astronomical units (AU).

  6. Europa Clipper will seek to confirm the presence of its ocean. For example, measurements of the amount of flexing due to the tides are one important indicator -- if the ocean exists, the tides should deform the surface by about 30 m (100 feet); if the moon is frozen through, the tides should stretch the surface by only one meter (3 feet).

  7. 3 de may. de 2023 · Its most famous discovery at Europa was finding strong evidence of an ocean beneath the icy crust at the moon's surface. Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) launched on April 14, 2023, and is ...
