It was finished by Henry his son, as appears by an inscription over a back door of the castle which was not legible in Deering's, but preserved by a servant in the household of Henry Duke of Newcastle .

His rise was rapid; he had attained the rank of marquess by 1619, and in the same year was made lord high admiral, a position for which he was singularly ill-fitted. Created Duke of Buckingham in 1623.
