Bellingham hatte einige Jahre zuvor wohl zu Unrecht längere Zeit in Russland in Haft gesessen und hatte nach seiner Rückkehr nach England vergeblich versucht, von der britischen Regierung hierfür eine Entschädigung zu bekommen.
