Hace 4 días · Grant arrived at Chattanooga on Oct. 23, 1863 to find his army starving.On October 29, 1863 the first supplies along the Cracker Line reached Chattanooga.At first, the line transported mostly vegetables and small rations, but the shorter days and cold nights required other supplies such as blankets and firewood.

Hace 4 días · Grant was an 1843 graduate of West Point, commissioned as a brevet second lieutenant. In 1854 he left the army so he could be with his wife and children. By 1861 he and his family were living in Galena, Illinois, where he stoically worked daytime in his father's leathergoods store and happily returned home to his wife and children in the evenings.

Even after the catastrophic nature of the situation became clear to Grant, he had a face-to-face talk with Ward, urging him to be brave. Again, one must be very skeptical of Wards assertions.
