At the time there were two surviving branches of the Wittelsbach family: Palatinate-Zweibrücken (headed by Maximilian Joseph) and Palatinate-Birkenfeld (headed by Count Palatine William). Maximilian Joseph inherited Charles Thedore's title of Elector of Bavaria, while William was compensated with the title of Duke in Bavaria.

Elisabeth of the Palatinate. Elisabeth of the Palatinate (German: Elisabeth von der Pfalz; 26 December 1618 – 11 February 1680), also known as Elisabeth of Bohemia (Elisabeth von Böhmen), Princess Elisabeth of the Palatinate, or Princess-Abbess of Herford Abbey, was the eldest daughter of Frederick V, Elector Palatine (who was briefly King of Bohemia), and Elizabeth Stuart.
Agnes of the Palatinate (1201–1267) was a daughter of Henry V, Count Palatine of the Rhine, of the House of Welf, by his first wife Agnes of Hohenstaufen, daughter and heiress of Conrad of Hohenstaufen, Count Palatine of the Rhine. She married Otto II Wittelsbach, Duke of Bavaria .
Mechthild of the Palatinate (1418–1482) was a princess and major patroness of the literary arts in the 15th century. [1] Born to Ludwig III, Elector Palatine and Matilda of Savoy, she was married by the age of 15 to Ludwig I, Count of Württemberg-Urach. [1] Five children came out of the marriage, but by age 31 she became a widow.
