He was one of the Babenberg dukes of Swabia. Herman became duke in 1030 following the death of his older brother Ernest II. At the time he was still a minor.

Cuando se fundó Hesse-Rotenburg en 1627, Hermann ocupó la regencia en Rotenburg. En Waldeck, el 31 de diciembre de 1633, Ermanno se casó con la condesa Sofia Giuliana di Waldeck (1 de abril de 1607 - 15 de septiembre de 1637), hija del conde Cristiano.
