Peter Jefferson was an accomplished surveyor and with his friend Joshua Fry undertook several expeditions to the west. Together they drew up the most detailed map of Virginia of the mid-eighteenth century, published in 1751, which gave expression both to newly-settled lands of the interior and to the vast unclaimed territories on the other side of the Alleghenies.
