On 6 January 1681, the first recorded boxing match took place in Britain when Christopher Monck, 2nd Duke of Albemarle (and later Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica) engineered a bout between his butler and his butcher with the latter winning the prize.
Also, Albemarle was an old man of fifty-two in 1660. He was there fore as anxious as any Renaissance pope to amass a fortune for his only son, Christopher, to inherit soon. Such popes had often previously en joyed a splendid and ambitious plan of life as cardinals, whereas Monck had lived frugally in army quarters for much of his recent life.
