En 1860 se trasladó a Freshwater Bay, en la isla de Wight. Fue allí, tres años después, cuando Julia Margaret Cameron, con sus hijos ya adultos y estando bastante sola, cayó en una depresión.
Hardinge Hay Cameron was born on 5 August 1846 in Chowringhee, Calcutta, Bengal Province, India, the third son and fourth child of Charles Hay Cameron, British jurist, and Julia Margaret née Pattle, British photographer. He was baptised at Fort William, Bengal, on 26 August 1846.
Cameron was educated in France, but returned to India, and in 1838 married Charles Hay Cameron, a jurist and member of the Law Commission stationed in Calcutta, who was twenty years her senior. They had five children together, and also raised five young relations and an Irish girl called Mary Ryan whom Cameron adopted and used as a frequent photographic model.
Además, conoció en Sudáfrica a su futuro marido: Charles Hay Cameron (1795-1881). Era reformador legislativo y del sistema educativo en la India. Después, amasaría una gran fortuna, gracias a las plantaciones de café de Ceilán.
Artistic Beginnings. Julia Margaret Cameron was born in Calcutta, India in 1815. Her father, James Pattle, was a judge of the Calcutta High Court during British rule. She and her six spirited sisters grew up comfortably as prominent members of Anglo-Indian society. In 1838 she married Charles Hay Cameron, a distinguished jurist and legal reformer.
