His funeral was held in the Morizkirche in Coburg; thousands of spectators came to the funeral, including Emperor Wilhelm II and the Prince of Wales.

Ernest was born in Coburg as the eldest child of Ernest III, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld , and his duchess, Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg .
