The village of Wingfield was in medieval times the seat of one of the most powerful families in England, the de la Poles, Earls and Dukes of Suffolk. The story of the Wingfield Castle began in 1384 when Michael de La Pole obtained the Kings’s leave to crenelate his masum mannem Wyngefeld ” and enclose all the land belonging to the estate.
