Alexander Stewart was probably born around 1493, the son of James IV by his first long-term mistress Marion Boyd, niece of the Earl of Angus. He had one full sister who lived to adulthood- Katherine Stewart, Countess of Morton- and also many half-siblings, both illegitimate and legitimate.

He was their fourth child and would succeed to the throne as James V. Margaret's sixth child, Alexander, duke of Ross (1514–1515), was born after James IV's death at Flodden Field. Too many pregnancies, following in too quick a succession, together with the cold, draughty, unsanitary conditions prevailing in 16th-century Scottish castles were probably responsible for the high infant mortality.

His mother was the King's favourite mistress, Lady Margaret Erskine, daughter of John Erskine, 5th Lord Erskine, and wife of Sir Robert Douglas of Lochleven. In January of 1488, James III attempted to gain supporters among the Scottish Lairds by naming James Stewart the Duke of Ross, and elevating four other Lairds to full Lords of Parliament. It is not clear whether he was an active participant in the rebellion against his father or not but Prince James served as the figurehead.
