Maria, Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh was a member of the British royal family. She was the Countess Waldegrave from 1759 to 1766, as a result of her first marriage to James Waldegrave, 2nd Earl Waldegrave. Her second husband was Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, whom she married in 1766.

Maria Walpole was the daughter of Edward Walpole and Dorothy Clements. Her grandfather was Robert Walpole, considered to be the first Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1721-41). Her parents were not married, and her illegitimate status hindered her social standing despite her family connections.
Maria Walpole (1739-1807) était la nièce de Sir Horace Walpole, écrivain et amateur d’art proche de Reynolds, qui lui commanda ce portrait de sa nièce, exécuté en 1761. Elle avait épousé en 1759 le comte James Waldegrave (1715-1763) ; leur fille était née le 24 mars 1760, elle a donc entre un et deux ans sur ce portrait.
