Off screen, she epitomized the Southern Belle--beauty, hospitality and flirtatiousness.
Sullavan was afflicted with mental health problems (including depression exacerbated by increasing deafness in middle age) and she died, aged 50, of a barbiturate overdose. Biography She was born Margaret Brooke Sullavan on May 16, 1909, in Norfolk, Virginia. Her father was a stockbroker and the family were comfortably off.
