Na zijn dood in 1269, maakte zijn weduwe Dervorguilla van Galloway de stichting definitief: ze bracht de nodige goederen in en formuleerde in 1282 de statuten van het college.

It consists of Holywell Manor itself, which dates from 1516 (including James Fairfax Yard, an annexe attached to the Manor), some rooms at Jowett Walk, and four new accommodation blocks at the Master’s Field, completed in 2021.

Though most of its buildings are, in fact, Victorian, its founders were at the core of medieval Britain, parents of a king of Scotland (King John Balliol reigned from 1292-96) and the subjects of an old, if somewhat gruesome, romantic tale.
