Brenda’s best friend was a lighting and set-designer / director Roy Bennett, who worked for a company called Pollico that had won a contract to do Boston’s first tour. While in California on tour with Sammy Hagar, Roy being one of the best in the business landed a job doing lighting for an up and coming artist which turned out to be Prince.

Naturally, they sang a similar style of music to Prince, combining R&B/funk with rock and pop. However, Vanity 6 was short-lived. Two years after their only hit, Vanity left the group and launched her solo career at Motown Records.

Word on the Old School curb is that when Prince first formulated Vanity 6, he initially wanted his then girlfriend, Susan Moonsie, to be the lead singer, but she was too shy and didn’t want to be the lead, so they went with the late, Denise Matthews (Vanity) instead and everybody was happy.
Brenda Bennett is a singer and dancer, recruited by Prince to perform alongside Vanity and Susan Moonsie in his protégé side group Vanity 6. When Vanity left the project just before Prince's movie Purple Rain was to be filmed, Brenda and Susan remained with Vanity's replacement, Apollonia Kotero in the group Apollonia 6.
