Georges Boulanger werd in juli 1887 commandant van het 13e Legerkorps in Clermont-Ferrand. Bij zijn vertrek per trein vanuit het Gare de Lyon op 8 juli werd hij door een grote volksmassa toegejuicht en beplakt met posters met de tekst "Il reviendra" ("Hij komt terug"). Het vertrek van de trein werd uiteindelijk met twee uur vertraagd.
