Catherine Sheffield, Duchess of Buckingham and Normanby (c. 1681 – 13 March 1743), formerly Lady Catherine Darnley, was an illegitimate daughter of King James II of England, and was married to two English noblemen in succession.
By James II, Lady Dorchester had a daughter, Lady Catherine Darnley (died 1743), who married James Annesley, 3rd Earl of Anglesey, and after his death married John Sheffield, 1st Duke of Buckingham and Normanby. Through Catherine Darnley she was the ancestress of the Barons Mulgrave and of the Mitford sisters.
Edmund Sheffield, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Normanby (1716–1735) Following the death of the 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Normanby,the greater part of the Sheffield family estates, including the principal residence at Normanby Park, passed to his half-brother, Sir Charles Herbert later Sheffield, 1st Bt., the illegitimate son of his father by his mistress Frances Lambert.
Edmund Sheffield, 2nd Duke of Buckingham. Edmund, who succeeded his father as 2nd Duke of Buckingham, was baptised at St Margaret's Westminster on 29th January 1716 and served in Germany with his uncle. He died of consumption in Rome on 30th October 1735 and his body was returned to the Abbey for burial in the family vault on 31st January 1736.
