Katharine Houghton Hepburn was born and raised in Hartford and West Hartford, the daughter of Katharine Martha Houghton, a suffragist and champion of women’s rights, and Dr. Thomas Hepburn, a prominent surgeon.
Houghton was named after her maternal grandmother, Connecticut suffragist and reformer Katharine Martha Houghton Hepburn. She attended Kingswood-Oxford School and Sarah Lawrence College, where she majored in philosophy. Partially influenced by her aunt actress Katharine Hepburn, she pursued acting as a way to help alleviate her osteoarthritis.
Three years after Katharine Houghton Hepburn moved to Hartford with her husband, she attended a lecture given by the prominent British suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst.The founder of the Women’s Franchise League, Pankhurst brought a message to Connecticut that justified the use of confrontational tactics to achieve women’s equality and suffrage.

Margaret Houghton (Hepburn) Perry (1920-2006), a librarian. Katharine died on 17 Mar 1951 in W. Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut at the age of 73 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. [6] Thomas died 20 Nov 1962 at Hartford at the age of 82. [7] His remains were buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford.
