Hoping to seek opportunities and escape the extreme racial discrimination in the Deep South, Coles moved his family to Chicago, Illinois, in 1923 as part of the Great Migration of southern Blacks to the Midwest and East.

Although an accomplished pianist, he owes most of his popular musical fame to his soft baritone voice, which he used to perform in big band and jazz genres.

Cole was born Nathaniel Adams Coles on March 17, 1919 to Edward and Perlina Cole in Montgomery, Alabama. Edward was a Christian minister. He had three brothers Eddie, Freddy (still living), Ike, and a half-sister Joyce. The bright lights and promise of fame that show business had to offer lured all of the Cole brothers.
