Claude Lyon-Bowes was born in Redbourn, Hertfordshire. He was the second surviving son of Thomas George Lyon-Bowes, Lord Glamis (son of the 11th Earl), and his wife Charlotte Grimstead. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Lyon-Bowes, 11th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Louisa Rodney Carpenter.

Thomas George Lyon-Bowes, 12th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne (28 September 1822 – 13 September 1865), styled Lord Glamis between 1834 and 1846, was a Scottish peer and cricketer. Background Lyon-Bowes was the eldest surviving son of Thomas Lyon-Bowes, Lord Glamis, son of Thomas Bowes-Lyon, 11th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.
On the death of the 10th Earl in 1820 the Bowes estates in the north of England passed to a natural son, John Bowes, but on the latter's death in 1885 they reverted to his cousin, the 13th Earl.
