Josiah Mason’s foundation was located in Edmund Street in the centre of Birmingham and was called Mason Science College. Subjects taught in the 1880s included Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Metallurgy, Biology, Physiology, Geology and Mineralogy, Civil and Mechanical Engineering, Greek, Latin, English, French and German.

From humble beginnings, Mason made his fortune by mass-producing key rings, pens, pen nibs and electroplating. He became one of the country’s most esteemed industrialists and philanthropists and was knighted for his generosity in establishing a great orphanage in the suburb of Erdington.
Many students, both in and outside the College of Science, choose a minor to explore a second or more detailed interest. When sharing academic accomplishments, it can be a good marketing tool to demonstrate a person's focus or specialty.
