Aaron Douglas was an American painter, illustrator and visual arts educator. He was a major figure in the Harlem Renaissance. He developed his art career painting murals and creating illustrations that addressed social issues around race and segregation in the United States by utilizing African-centric imagery.

After receiving a B.A. from the University of Nebraska (1922) and teaching art at an elite public high school for black students in Kansas City, Missouri, Douglas moved to the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, the cultural capital of black America throughout the early 20th century.

Aaron Douglas was born in Topeka, Kansas on May 26, 1899. Douglas began his studies at the University of Nebraska at the age of nineteen, and in 1922 he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Following his studies in Nebraska, he taught visual arts at Lincoln High School in Kansas City, Missouri for two years.
