George was born in London on 30th December 1898, the only son of Olga Mary Adelaide FitzGeorge and Charles Edward Archibald Watkin Hamilton (known as Archibald). They also had a daughter in 1902, but tragically she only survived a few hours.
His mother was Olga Mary Adelaide FitzGeorge (1878–1928), daughter of Rear Admiral Sir Adolphus Augustus Frederick FitzGeorge KCVO. She was a cousin of Queen Victoria and a grand-daughter of the Duke of Cambridge, a male-line descendant of George III.
