17 de may. de 2018 · Duke Kahanamoku suffered a fatal heart attack at the Waikiki Yacht Club and died on January 22, 1968. His death marked the passing of a world-class athlete in swimming and surfing who also served as a vital link to Hawaii's past. In 1984 Kahanamoku was posthumously inducted into the U.S. Olympic Committee Hall of Fame.

Duke Paoa Kahino Makoe Hulikohoa Kahanamoku ( Honolulu, 1890. augusztus 24. – Honolulu, 1968. január 22.) hawaii őslakos olimpiai bajnok amerikai úszó, vízilabdázó, színész, a szörf sport népszerűsítője. Öccse, Samuel Kahanamoku is olimpiai érmes úszó.
Duke Kahanamoku jako pierwszy został członkiem International Swimming Hall of Fame i Surfing Hall of Fame. Na jego cześć urządzane są zawody Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championships. The Ambassador of Aloha. In 1959, when Hawaii became the 50th US State, Kahanamoku was officially named State of Hawaii Ambassador of Aloha. In the following years, he survived brain surgery and even danced the hula with England's Queen Mother, Elizabeth. He lived 77 years and passed away on January 22, 1968. Duke embodies the spirit of Aloha.

His death in 1968, at the age of 77, inspired the island of Oahu to put on a funeral for the ages. His ashes were brought down the streets of Honolulu to Waikiki Beach accompanied by a massive police escort. His ashes were scattered as the massive crowd sang traditional Hawaiian songs.
