John Purdue John purdue was the founder and benefactor of this university. He was born in Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania, the only male in a family of eight children. Although he disliked teaching, he taught school in Pickway County, Ohio, for four years. On his first visit to Lafayette in 1837, he was impressed by the possibilities of the town.
