Samuel Slater (1768-1835): Founder of the American Cotton-textile Industry As an apprentice in England, Slater gained a thorough knowledge of cotton manufacturing. He immigrated to the United States in 1789, attracted by the bounties offered there for workers skilled in the manufacturing of cotton.
