Engel, surgió un nuevo modelo, que llegó para quedarse en muchos ámbitos de la salud: el modelo biopsicosocial, que tiene en cuenta los factores biológicos, psicológicos y sociales de la persona a la hora de explicar, entender y afrontar un determinado estado de salud o enfermedad, discapacidad o trastorno.
