Introduction to the play. Hamlet is Shakespeare’s most popular, and most puzzling, play. It follows the form of a “revenge tragedy,” in which the hero, Hamlet, seeks vengeance against his father’s murderer, his uncle Claudius, now the king of Denmark. Much of its fascination, however, lies in its uncertainties.
Hamlet has the opportunity to kill him, but believing he is at prayer and will thus go to heaven, he does not take it. In his mother’s chamber he berates her about the death of his father; she says she knows nothing about it. Hamlet kills Polonius, who has been spying on them, thinking he is Claudius.

Hamlet es una tragedia de venganza. El espíritu de su padre le pide al joven príncipe de Dinamarca que vengue el asesinato que su propio hermano perpetró contra él. Sin embargo, en la obra de Shakespeare, no destaca la realización de la venganza, sino que el conflicto interno del héroe tiene prioridad.
