Letter from George Washington to Gov. Robert Dinwiddie, 18 May 1754 (Front). Fearing a French incursion to lay claim to the Ohio Valley, Dinwiddie sent a force to the region led by 22-year-old George Washington. Washington engaged a French force and killed its commanding officer, combat that initiated the Seven Years’ War.
