He held this castle for Queen Mary from May 1568 to May 1573 and after its honourable surrender suffered death for devotion to her cause on 3rd August 1573.

James Kirkcaldy. Sir James Kirkcaldy of Grange (died 1556), a Fife laird and treasurer of Scotland. [1] He married Janet Melville, aunt of Sir James Melville of Halhill. Their heir was William Kirkcaldy of Grange. His main property was called Hallyards Castle. The name is sometimes spelled Kirkaldy.
SIR WILLIAM KIRKCALDY OF GRANGE (c. 1520-1573), Scottish politician, was the eldest son of Sir James Kirkcaldy of Grange (d. 1556), a member of an old Fifeshire family. Sir James was lord high treasurer of Scotland from 1537 to 1543 and was a determined opponent of Cardinal Beaton, for whose murder in 1546 he was partly responsible.
