William Cavendish, Earl, Marquess and 1st Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne, was the eldest son of Sir Charles Cavendish. He was appointed governor to Prince Charles in 1638 and remained a staunch royalist during the civil war, becoming general of the king's forces north of the River Trent.
