Alexander was promoted to the post of Field Marshall in 1944 and two years later was made a Viscount. From 1946 to 1952 he served as Canada’s Governor-General. He was made Earl Alexander of Tunis in 1952 and from then until 1954 he served as Minister of Defence in the Conservative cabinet under Churchill. Harold Alexander died in 1969.

Harold Alexander, the third son of the Earl of Caledon, was born in London on 10th December, 1891. After attending Harrow School (1904-08) he joined Sandhurst Military Academy. He graduated in 1911 and won a commission in the Irish Guards. During the First World War Alexander fought on the Western Front.
