Suchet fut élu lieutenant-colonel par les volontaires de l'Ardèche en 1793. Chef de brigade en 1797 puis général de brigade en 1798,général de division et chef d'état-major de Joubert à l'armée d'Italie en 1799, il prit le commandement de cette dernière après la mort de son chef.
