Henry Knox ( 1750 - 1806) was a military leader for the Americans during the American Revolutionary War. Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, he was appointed Chief Artillery Officer of the Continental Army. He is best known for transporting cannons and other artillery from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston through icy conditions using oxen.
Henry Knox was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 25, 1750. The first official U.S. secretary of war, Knox spent his entire professional life engaged in military affairs. From 1768 to 1776, he involved himself with military organizations based near his home in Boston, including three years of service with the Boston Grenadier Corps (1773-1776).
Knox also brought one massive 24-pounder cannon, nicknamed “Old Sow,” that weighed more than 5,000 pounds and several high-arching mortar guns that weighed one ton each. In total, Henry Knox’s “noble train of artillery” weighed 120,000 pounds, or 60 tons. On December 9, 1775, three boats loaded with artillery set sail on Lake George.

Two of the most unlikely American heroes of the war were Henry Knox and Nathanael Greene, men who both possessed physical challenges.

Revolutionary War. Knox supported the American cause, and as early as 1772, he became a member of the Boston Grenadier Corps. He was a volunteer in June 1775 at the Battle of Bunker Hill. He served under General Ward, in charge of the colonials around Boston. In 1775, Washington arrived in Boston, taking command of the army.
