Sir Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrien, photographed by Bassano Ltd, 30 May 1927 Thomas’s brother Horace is of particular note; General Sir Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrien was a distinguished army general who served in the Second Boer War and World War I, commanding at the Second Battle of Ypres.
British General Sir Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrien is famous for his part in two famous events; the Battle of Isandhlwana in 1879, and the Battle of Le Cateau in 1914. At Isandhlwana, he was one of only five soldiers to survive the Zulu Army's envelopment of an invading column of British troops.

On the Western Front, Smith-Dorrien led troops at the Battles of Mons (1914), Le Cateau (1914), the First Battle of Ypres (1914), Second Battle of Ypres (1915). In 1915, he was appointed to a command in German East Africa, but after a year he was forced to resign from this post due to ill health.
Horace Smith-Dorrien werd geboren in Berkhamsted, hij is het twaalfde kind uit een gezin van zestien. Hij studeerde aan Harrow. De 26 februari 1876, ging hij naar de Koninklijke Militaire Academie in Sandhurst. het wordt opgenomen in het 95 ste Derbyshire Infantry Regiment. De 1 st November 1878, werd hij naar Zuid-Afrika gestuurd.
