Simon de Montfort, French leader of the Albigensian Crusade declared by Pope Innocent III against the Cathari, an unorthodox religious group in southern France. For his service, Simon was awarded the lands of Raymond VI, count of Toulouse. Raymond rejected the decision, and Simon was killed in combat outside Toulouse.
