Adam Hepburn was born on 17 March 1482, in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland as the son of Patrick Hepburn 1st Earl of Bothwell and Margaret Gordon. He married Agnes Isabel Stewart on 28 August 1511, in Holyrood, Midlothian, Scotland. They were the parents of at least 1 son and 2 daughters. He registered for military service in 1513.

When Adam Hepburn Earl van Bothwell Lord Hailes was born on 17 March 1482, in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland, his father, Patrick Hepburn 1st Earl of Bothwell, was 30 and his mother, Lady Janet Douglas, was 21. He married Isabel Agnes Stewart of Buchan, Countess of Bothwell on 28 August 1511.

He was a trusted advisor to the Scottish king, and his counsel was sought out by many who sought to curry favor with the crown. Hepburn's son, Adam, succeeded him as the 2nd Earl of Bothwell, but his reign was short-lived.
