Biography. Richard Maibaum was born in 1909 in New York City. In 1930 he came to The University of Iowa's Speech and Dramatic Arts Department, where he studied under E.C. Mabie. He was graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1931, and in 1932 he received a master's degree. During this time, Maibaum was writing plays and acting.

Richard Maibaum was born in the Bronx of New York City on May 26th, 1909. Even from a young age, Maibaum was very interested in film and theater: "As a kid, I used to sneak into theaters--risking my life to climb up fire escapes and through men's rooms, then emerging into balconies--because I liked early serials and thrillers" (McGilligan, 270).
